Skilled Labour Services branded van in a car park

Ignore the news headlines

If you’ve been reading our articles for a while now, you’ll have heard us say this – ignore the headlines filled with doom and gloom about construction. Here’s why the Skilled Labour Services team still stand by this statement based on the current state of construction as we head into the end of Q1/2023.

Hear what construction industry voices are telling you

As labour suppliers, we probably have access to a broader view of the industry than most other businesses. After all, the team talks to industry leaders and their teams “on the ground” every day.

Whilst it is fair to say there is an air of caution surrounding most industries and the economy in general, it is also fair to say we haven’t spoken to many firms that aren’t busy!

Bosses are actively diversifying, de-risking and looking at ways to be lean. But, by and large, the industry is thriving with well-managed, financially prudent companies looking set to succeed and grow as we move further into 2023.

Welcome to Karen Barker

As we alluded to last month, Karen Barker joined the team this year and is doing a great job looking after payroll and onboarding new clients and operatives. With related industry experience Karen has quickly got to grips with her workload and you’ll likely speak to Karen when you call to book operatives for your projects.

Shore up your resilience with Skilled Labour Services

Cutting your wage bill is an obvious choice when you’re looking to de-risk your business. But engaging temporary labour is also a great decision when you’re busy due to the flexibility of ” buying” the skills you need when and where you need them.

From our perspective, we are keeping around 50 operatives fully engaged on projects at any given time. Our contracts include housebuilding, industrial projects, highways, HS2 and rail across London and the south-east. Looking back, this is double those deployed in January 2022.

Drawing on our market confidence, we recently invested in our vehicle fleet with four new vans. In all honesty, when the orders were placed, we anticipated the new vans would be sitting unused from time to time. So far, that hasn’t been the case. From day one, they’ve all been fully deployed.

In short, if you need pre-vetted, qualified and experienced labour for your contracts that you can rely on to have transport to get to the site – give Ricky Clarke a call.

What’s Rich up to these days?

Fear not – Rich hasn’t hung up his trainers since running the London Marathon on behalf of the Lighthouse Charity last year. Already this year he’s been spotted running the Ryde 10 mile race on the Isle of Wight (it’s a hilly one if you’re not familiar with it) and will be hitting the South Downs at the end of February when he tackles the Big Mud Marathon.

Keep your projects on track with Skilled Labour Services

If you’ve got a civil engineering or groundworks project in need of staff, Ricky, Karen and Richard are here to help you find the right people for your needs. Give them a call or get in touch today. With an extensive database of vetted, qualified and experienced people to choose from you can be confident we’ll get people on site quickly.
